  1. Any device that can be used to measure time
  2. though usually meaning a timepiece which uses
  3. a train of cogs and wheels driven by a spring
  4. controlled by a balance wheel or a weight on 
  5. a pendulum.
  6. A Sundial is a clock and a primitive form of 
  7. this,called a Shadow-clock,was used by the 
  8. ancient Egyptians during the day.A Water-
  9. clock being used during the night.
  10. Until the 16th. century sand-clocks in the
  11. form of hour-glasses were used at sea(by the
  12. Royal Navy until about 1820).
  13. Watches are portable clocks.The first one
  14. being invented in the early 1500's in 
  15. Nuremberg.
  16. The first English public clock was erected 
  17. on Salisbury Cathedral in 1386 and is
  18. still working.
  19. The device has developed from these early,
  20. primitive,forms,via the Electric clock,to 
  21. the Quartz clock(using crystals) and thence
  22. to the Atomic clock which is accurate to 
  23. within one millionth of a second a day.
